When we didn’t see Denali – also known as Mount McKinley – during the ride through Denali National Park and Preserve, we took matters into our own hands. Well actually the hands of the incomparable JJ and his co-pilot, me. The weather still didn’t cooperate and we did not get to see the southern side of the great peak – the tallest in North America at over 20000 feet – the side most often seen in photographs. Two nights before we had sat and heard the tale of climbing this mountain from Jimmy Hendricks (I kid you not) who shared his story of making a life in the wilderness and ascending the mountain. It was worth the trip. The photos were taken at an altitude of about 12000 feet and about 3 miles away from the peak. It was breathtakingly beautiful.
