Alaska: Sitka Salmonberries

Salmonberries taste like a diffused raspberry. Not the rich tart flavor, but something reminiscent and fresh. I described it as what green must taste like. They are often red or yellow and ripen during the summer months about the time the salmon starts to run (hence the name).

It is one of the things – along with the salmon – that bring the bears down from higher altitude and to the rivers where they gorge themselves on Berries and fish. And they get to sleep all winter. Not too shabby if you ask me.
