For me, it started with a simple question…. “would I consider being a part of a young girl’s life?” It inspired thoughts about what ingredients make a family? Unequivocally, the answer was a resounding yes. With Ellie came two dads, a Kiki (not everyone has one of these) and a circle of close friends. Life is like a roller coaster with its ups and downs and rapid turns that make for unsettled feelings and over the last year all of us who shared Thanksgiving together have experienced that. Within our group there are two new homes, a new baby, 4 new jobs, the dissolution of two relationships, and the host of challenges that come with your real family. In all cases, we have provided support, smiles, laughs, hugs, wisdom and perspective. The families we make are bound by choice and a bit more vulnerable. Perhaps that is why they are so precious. I am happy to be a part of this young girl’s life for in it I have been given the greatest of gifts – an extended family of my making.
