Jr. Lifeguards

lifeguard training

It was Spring Break and so I am sure this was not the photo I thought I was taking.

It looked to me like one of the Junior Lifeguard programs – we have one in Laguna and there is one in Huntington Beach. As Chuck and I walked the Huntington Beach Bike Trail – a trail that extends from Newport Beach through and to the other side of Huntington – we saw what looked like one of these classes. The HB Junior Lifeguard program was established in 1963 to educate children to recognize potential hazardous conditions associated with an ever-changing aquatic environment. Emphasis is placed on safety, respect, physical fitness, instruction, and discipline. Students are schooled in the oceanic environment, First Aides, C.P.R., mutual cooperation, competition techniques, and lifesaving methods. While living in LB, we would watch these kids, in the summer, take their timed swimming test and so, when I saw kids lined up on the beach I flashed back to those early mornings.
